SeaWorld Controversy

Although Blackfish is not about SeaWorld, they do aim at franchises who use sea creatures as a form of entertainment. Because of the movie, SeaWorld received backlash for their actions. Regardless of the backlash SeaWorld has not made a change to their actions.

The animals endangered by SeaWorld include:

  • Beluga Whales
  • Dolphins
  • Penguins
  • Sea Lions
  • Walruses
  • Sharks
  • Stingrays
  • Orcas

The issue of keeping animals in the SeaWorld facility is how little space is offered for the animals. The animals are kept in small tanks, with the dimensions of 35 feet deep, and 0.0615 miles long. An appropriate size tank would have to be near 1000 feet deep and cover a distance of 100 miles.

Kate Collins, an anti-SeaWorld advocate, said, “SeaWorld houses their animals harshly. The proportion of their habitats to animals, are similar to a human-being living in a bathtub. It’s unacceptable. Their actions cause animals to become depressed, and obtain physical damage.”

According to Psychology Today:“It’s not all that surprising that captive animals show severe signs of stress and depression given how their lives are severely compromised.”

SeaWorld has yet to respond to the issue at hand and is choosing to not make a change. There are solutions to the problem, such as: upgrading tanks, shutting down, or freeing animals.

“SeaWorld either needs to purchase an ocean-sized tank, or simply needs to shut down. They have made no recent changes to their tank sizes, and yet have the money to make a change,” said Collins.

Since 2012, SeaWorld has been making well over a billion dollars yearly from their exhibits. And in 2022, they made the most profits in franchise history, totaling $1.712 billion.

Despite the controversy behind their actions, people still provide profits for SeaWorld.

“People should not fund SeaWorld by investing, visiting, or donating. SeaWorld is responsible for many deaths of animals that could have been stopped if people stopped using animals as a form of entertainment,” said Collins.

SeaWorld is responsible for the death of 44 Orcas due to captivity. And as of 2/1/2023, they hold 18 orcas  in their three locations.

A good way to support the fight against SeaWorld is to voice your thoughts and opinions. It would also be helpful to sign this petition to shut down SeaWorld.
