Breaking their 0-3 losing streak, Leesville beat Sanderson 62-32 at their home game on Friday, January 29.
The Lady Pride basketball team had a rough start to the season. So far, they’ve been blown out by Cardinal Gibbons and Millbrook. They also lost to Holly Springs by 3 points.
Facing Sanderson was a chance for redemption, and Leesville did not take this opportunity for granted.
The game started off slow, each team scoring back and forth. Leesville could not stop drives to the middle of the lane. At the end of the first quarter, the score was 12-10, Leesville leading.
Fired up, Leesville took off in the second quarter. The score for the second quarter alone was 20-8, making the overall score 30-20.
They came back after halftime with great defense. They kept Sanderson to only 4 points in this quarter.
Finally, they went onto the fourth quarter and finished it off. The score was 21-8 in the last quarter, and the final score was 62-32.
Overall, Leesville played strong defense. Their intense full-court press caused many turnovers — shown best by Kandace Daniels, junior, who had 6 steals.
They also executed well on offense. The lead scorer for Leesville was Kyla McGhee, junior, who has been on the varsity women’s basketball team for the past 3 years. She ended the game with 18 points.
The Leesville Women’s basketball team definitely took a step forward during their match with Sanderson. Hopefully, Leesville will carry this momentum into their next game, February 9, against Millbrook.
