One of the best parts of the holiday season is the influx of old music, new music, new takes of old music and all that good stuff. Every year, more and more musicians of all genres give their own stylistic twist to classic festive sounds, and I find that infinitely fascinating even if some of those songs aren’t my taste or if they objectively suck. In addition to all the classic holiday favorites like “All I Want for Christmas Is You” and “Santa Baby,” this year I’m also listening to The Regrettes’ holiday song “Holiday-ish” featuring Dylan Minnette.

The Regrettes, a punk rock band from Los Angeles, have a fun sound that mixes elements of chaotic garage punk music and low-energy 60’s doo-wop. Dylan Minnette, who’s probably best known for his role as Clay in 13 Reasons Why, adds some smooth male vocals to harmonize with the lead singer Lydia Night’s charmingly sweet voice.

“Holiday-ish” contains all the typical sparkly sounds associated with Christmas music– bells, whistling, a tasteful xylophone– plus The Regrettes’ usual retro-punk sound. However, this song is more chill than most of their usual songs because they don’t feature their typical heavy drums and energetic bass.

As far as holiday songs go, this is a pretty good one. It has all the necessary Christmas imagery to get you in the mood for the holidays added to the unique retro beach vibe customary in The Regrettes’ usual music.
