Canvas is an online learning management system tool that allows students to have access to courses, submit assignments, and see their grades. Wake County schools have been using Canvas since February 2023. On May 7th, 2026, Canvas was hacked and shut down.
Canvas was brought back on May 11, 2026. But while it was gone, we were forced to figure out a way to work around it.
Leesville did a great job of finding ways to jump over the barrier that losing Canvas placed upon school systems. Instead of relying on Canvas, teachers sent out talking points to students and used email to communicate assignments.
Students applying for NHS (National Honors Society) had no way of submitting their applications because it was all done on Canvas. The due date passed by leaving students confused on what to do. The teachers pushed back the due date for the applications once Canvas was online.
Since many students had different theories, it’s interesting to see whose predictions actually came true.
Samantha Gould, sophomore, typed, “I honestly have no idea what they’re going to do. But they might just end up doing most of the stuff over email. Unless they bring back Google Classrooms or [something].”
Most students predicted that the school systems would find another learning platform similar to the ones we have used in the past.
Alma Qasrawi, sophomore, typed, “I think that the schools are just going to use a new platform similar to Canvas and like Google Classroom.”
No one that was interviewed predicted that Canvas would simply reappear like it did. With Canvas up and running again, it was fascinating to see how everyone reacted and how the teachers dealt with it all. Even though the loss momentarily threw the school systems off, the world kept spinning and we kept moving forward.
