Advanced Placement (AP) English Literature and Composition senior students at Leesville have recently been collaborating to act out a scene from The Tragedy of Macbeth.
Students were given creative opportunities to change the dialogue, location, or characters of one specific scene from the play.
Students had to rewrite the script and then act out the modifications with creative aspects throughout their video projects. Some students changed their chosen scene to align to a show, movie, book, trend, or location.
Alana Adee, a current AP Lit student, said, “we took the scene where they killed Macduff’s son and we changed it to be a 70’s sitcom about a southern women.”
In order to make the correct changes in the play to maintain the same story line, students had to analyze the original script of old english. Although, the altercations allowed students to further relate to the Shakespearean play with modern language and connections.
In addition to acting out the newly revised scene, students had to work with their group to create a video explaining the purpose of their interpretations. The video was required to be 2 minutes long with a detailed explanation of why they made the changes they did and how it would affect the readers/viewers.
This major AP Lit assignment allowed students to use their creativity while also analyzing a difficult Shakespearean tragedy.
