With the start of the new 2024-2025 Leesville school year, the school has implemented a new class period called advisory. Every Leesville student has an assigned homeroom/advisory period according to their grade level.
A committee, consisting of teachers, administrators, and counselors worked together to develop the goals and objectives of the advisory. The team researched other schools that implemented advisory and altered their plans to meet the needs of the Leesville environment.
Ms. Arwood, Leesville’s testing coordinator and committee member, said, “The committee met a bunch last spring and looked at what other schools had done, and adapted their plans to make it something that we thought would work well at Leesville.”
During the first 2 weeks of school, students will convene with their homeroom between first and second period for 30 minutes (8:52 AM-9:22 AM). After the first 8 school days, students will attend advisory every Wednesday morning during the allotted time.
Advisory does not make the school day longer or shorter; instead, the lengths of other class periods are adjusted accordingly.
Advisory, also known as homeroom, is an opportunity for students to meet with their assigned teacher and classmates to discuss school updates, announcements, and important dates.
Besides reminding students of upcoming events, advisory works towards building a community through getting to know peers, improving academics, and social and emotional learning.
“Our number one goal for advisory is for students and staff to build relationships so that all students have a group that they feel they belong to — people and an adult — that knows them well and can help them navigate high school,” said Arwood.
Leesville staff and administrators hope that advisory will benefit students and their high school atmosphere.
