Voted “Favorite Restaurant Value” in 2010 by the Durham Convention and Visitors Bureau, Chubby’s Tacos has certainly lived up to this title in recent years.
Walking in you’re immediately put at ease with cozy booths and wonderful smells of spices that Chubby’s gives. The older building and smaller size may be off-putting for some, but once inside any fear of a low sanitation score or bad food disappears.
The menu provides a great variety of fresh, authentic food. From delicious fresh flour corn tortilla tacos to genuine gorditas and tortas, Chubby’s is anything but the greasy, fast-food found at many “Mexican” restaurants.
On my most recent visit I chose the ChubbyChanga, a Chubby’s original. It’s a small fried burrito filled with cheese, onions and salsa asada with your choice of either carnitas, timga, barbacoa, shredded or ground beef. It also comes with a side of rice, chips and your choice of either black or refried beans. All this for an extremely cheap $3.50. A price that on a high school or student budget can’t be beat.
Chubby’s also offers a strong variation of coupons and specials. Each week Chubby’s offers a different special. Past specials have included Shrimp and Tilapia Ceviche Tostadas, Confetti Chicken Tacos, Puerco con Salsa Verde, Chili Colorado Burritos and Camarones a la Diabla Quesadillas. Although coupons are rarely needed due to the low prices.
Don’t be fooled, however, by the low cost. It takes nothing away from the organic taste Chubby’s yields in its vegetables and meat. They also have a sweet dessert menu including Dulce de Leche Quesadilla, Fried Plantains, Fried Ice Cream and Sopapillas – fried flour tortilla dough with cinnamon and honey.
Chubby’s has five locations, with the most popular on Ninth Street in Durham. This Chubby’s is nestled between Duke University, surrounded by other original and quirky shops. Other locations in Raleigh and Durham can be found on Chubby’s website (http://www.chubbystacos.com/).
Whether you are looking for a cheap meal or great food, you can find both at Chubby’s Tacos. Their authenticity and fresh flavor put a unique spin on the average Mexican meal.
