As many fall sport athletes are in the middle of their season, winter sports, including women’s basketball, are just beginning workouts and tryouts.

The Lady Pride looks to start this season out strong, and they are working on improving their performance this season.

Last year, the varsity team finished with 10 wins and 13 losses. They were ranked 108 in the state of North Carolina.

“We are hoping to improve our defense and rebounding, and also focus on winning the tight games,” said Kathryn Mundell, LRHS spanish teacher and new JV basketball coach.

“I’m sure we will [improve this year]. It’s always different when there [are] new coaches coming in, but I think we will be able to work hard this year and improve,” says Emily Patton, senior basketball player.

The team has veteran players returning as well as some new freshman additions.

“Dana Worthy is going to add a lot to the varsity team, and we have a lot of incoming freshmen that are going to be great additions to the program,” said Mundell of her expectations for incoming players.

Hopefully, these new additions will help them to strengthen their relationship as a team.

“I’m looking forward to building more relationships with my teammates, and us all being able to improve,” says Patton.

Like all other sports, they have set goals for this year individually and as a team.

“I personally just want to be a stronger player and a stronger leader, and improve all of my skills all around,” said Patton.

“Our goals are going to be to improve our fundamentals, have a positive attitude and to have fun,” says Mundell.

Overall, the Lady Pride is looking forward to a both productive and exciting season of basketball. Hopefully, they will have a successful season and improve even more upon last year’s performance.
