United Arts, in partnership with the Raleigh Fine Arts Society and acclaimed performance poet Dasan Ahanu, has officially launched the fourth annual High School Spoken Word Contest. Students in grades 9-12 across Wake, Durham and Orange counties are invited to submit an original spoken word poem recorded as a video under three minutes long.
Ms.Tabron, English and yearbook teacher, said, “I think spoken word poetry is a creative way for students to express themselves that blends many artforms to create an original work. Traditional assignments can be formulaic, but spoken word poetry allows students to think outside the box.”
A panel of professional poets and spoken word artists will review entries to select 12 finalists. Every finalist will be honored at the special reception at the North Carolina Museum of Art and awarded a $100 Amazon gift card. The top three submissions will earn major cash prizes: $1,000 for first place, $500, for second place, and $300 for third place.
Tabron said, “I think it helps students see that there is a world beyond our school, and it helps them connect with the arts. I think all students benefit from more exposure to the arts, and participating in a competition can help them feel more confident in their skills.
A key element to making your video resonate with listeners is to include an intriguing hook and strong ending that helps the audience remember your poem.
Interested students can get help from Ms. White, creative writing teacher, and the Literary Magazine club. On October 20,2026 from 6:30 to 8:00pm Wake County Public Schools Libraries at Oberlin Regional Library will host a Teen Open Mic Night to help students prepare for the competition.
When asked what advice she has for a student with a great message but feels intimidated about performing on video, Tabron said, “I would say do it anyway! Fear shouldn’t stop them from getting their message out there. Someone else may need to hear it.“
Videos must be submitted through the online application form before the deadline on November 8, 2026, at 11:59 p.m.
The Spoken Word Contest is more than just a performance and competition. It is a platform to share what matters to you and make a real impact on your community.
