Spirit weeks, football games, and Homecoming often cluster in the fall, leaving the colder months feeling quiet and routine. That’s where the idea of Winterfest comes in.
Winterfest could be a mid-year celebration designed to bring energy back into the school community. Similar to Homecoming, it could include themed dress-up days, a pep rally, friendly class competitions, and maybe even a semi-formal dance.
February can feel long and stressful, especially with new classes and busy schedules, so having something fun on the calendar could boost morale and give students a break from academic pressure.
Also, Winterfest can be valuable for underclassmen. Since the spring formal event, Prom, is reserved for juniors and seniors, leaving freshmen and sophomores with just homecoming to look forward to. Winterfest could give those students something special to look forward to — a chance to dress up, take pictures with friends, and experience a dance that feels meaningful without having to wait until their upperclassmen years.
“Winterfest should be a real thing. It was really fun, and it would be good for sophomores and freshmen, as they don’t get to have prom. But I think any year you can do it,” said Sydney Butler, senior.
“All the big events are for juniors and seniors. Winterfest would give freshmen and sophomores a night to dress up, hang out with friends, and actually feel included instead of just waiting for our turn at prom,” said Reaghan Mueller, sophomore.
Winter sports teams could also benefit from added recognition during a Winterfest pep rally. Basketball, wrestling, and swim athletes often don’t get the same spotlight as fall sports during homecoming. A winter celebration could highlight their hard work and bring more attention to their seasons.
While planning another major event would take time and effort, Winterfest doesn’t have to be extravagant. Even something simple could make a big difference. For many students, it could become a tradition that makes the long winter months a little more exciting.
