As we approach the first in person, full week of the second semester, students are beginning to settle into schedules. While many students are satisfied with their classes, a large number will attempt to switch their schedules.
Students have 10 days from the beginning of a semester to “drop”, or switch out of, a class.
To efficiently switch schedules, a student must email their counselor with the specific class, period, reasoning for the change, and preferred alternatives.
Once a student submits their request, counselors will process them after school. Infinite Campus will not be updated until at least 6:00pm of that day.
Now, this process may sound easy, but there are a couple of challenges that students will face when trying to change their schedule.
One of Leesville counselor’s biggest pet peeves are when students elective surf. These students move from elective to elective, trying to get classes with their friends or move between lunches. To avoid this issue, students should clearly communicate why they want to switch out of a class.
Switching out of a class can be intimidating. Many students are afraid to speak out for their preferences and end up being trapped in a class for an entire semester.
Faith Holderman, sophomore, said, “I wish I would have switched out of World History Honors into AP World, but I was scared. I know I could have gotten an A in that class, and I didn’t want to risk my GPA.”
Another challenge to changing schedules is the numberof students Leesville has. Leesville’s classes are extremely full, with 25-35 students in each period. Seniors receive priority in the scheduling process, and the same rules apply to schedule changes. If a junior and a senior request a class at the same time, the senior will get the open slot. Students looking to change their classes must act quickly as the remaining spots fill up quickly.
If students are looking to change their second semester schedule, make sure they clearly communicate with their counselor and act fast.
