SpeakHER is an emerging women’s empowerment and advocacy group at Leesville, providing a platform for girls without a voice to be heard and supported when they need it most.
It’s designed to serve as a safe space for girls to turn to in the aftermath of harassment. The group has been designed from the ground up to empower women and help them overcome adversities through a strong and supportive community. “We want to make sure there is a safe space for women in high school and people in general who are dealing with sexual harassment and rumours,” said co-founder Isabel Synder.
The club is founded by Alexis Engelson and Isabel Synder, both Juniors at LRHS. “Personally, I went through something around the basis of harassment. I had my group of friends to help get me through it… After that, I was thinking there are probably so many other girls that this is happening to, and they don’t have that same community to support them,” said Alexis when asked what inspired the creation of the club.
She went on to reiterate the group’s overall mission statement, “so my goal following that was to create a microcommunity around Leesville for young women that are going through some of these things that don’t get talked about.”
Club meetings will initially consist of round table discussions, before having members split off to work on awareness posters and brochures. They also plan on collaborating with other female groups and foundations with the same mission.
The group’s interest meeting is set to take place on Tuesday, October 14th, in Room 117. Scheduled meetings will be held every other Tuesday and are open to anyone in search of a welcoming community.
