Mock Trial Club is a club for students interested in law and public speaking. It allows students to experience a trial setting by taking on the roles of lawyers and witnesses. Participants gain insight into the legal system while enhancing their public speaking, critical thinking, and teamwork skills through regional competitions.
The club has seen significant growth.
“When I joined last year, when I went to an interest meeting, there were about 12 people there…[but] this year, we had zero seats left for anyone,” said Eva Wilson, senior, who is the club’s social media manager. This increase can be credited to effective marketing strategies, including social media outreach and students spreading the word.
One of the primary challenges the Mock Trial Club faces is preparing for competitions. Wilson notes that there are many nerves during the first competition. To combat this, the club conducts “mini cases” with other schools and within their own team, allowing members to practice and build confidence.
They hold regular meetings—at least three times a month—where they review competition rules and etiquette, ensuring that everyone is well-prepared. The club also benefits from their advisor, Mrs. Horne, whose fiance is a practicing attorney, who provides them with guidance and direction.
The Mock Trial Club not only supports a deeper understanding of legal principles but also improves crucial skills such as public speaking and formal writing.
Wilson believes that the club contributes significantly to the school community — providing students with a space to explore their interests in law and criminology.
Mock Trial’s engaging environment encourages personal growth and the development of critical life skills.
