Homecoming is an annual weeklong school tradition. Homecoming week includes themed days, powderpuff, and the homecoming game. This week allows for students to come together and show their school spirit.
Homecoming Court is the student body’s way of recognizing students who embody pride and charisma.
Weeks before Homecoming, students fill out forms so that they can nominate two females and two males to homecoming court.
The people nominated for Homecoming Court attend the pep rally to lead and hype up their sections of students on the bleachers.
The members of the court are involved in many things during homecoming season. At halftime during the Homecoming Game, each member of the court is introduced. The nominees are part of the homecoming court page in the yearbook.
Before halftime at the Homecoming Game, the nominees walk around the track with the band and their escorts. Everyone on the court is dressed up, and then during halftime, the band plays, followed by the names and grades of the nominees are announced. The court members’ then get their pictures taken with their escorts and walk off.
Homecoming is an election — winning is fully determined by the amount of votes they receive.
Homecoming Court is important because homecoming itself is widely celebrated. The traditional aspect of homecoming is something that the whole school is involved with. No matter what grade a student is in, their homecoming is shared and something to be remembered.
Ms. Worthey, administrator, said, ¨[Homecoming] is a moment of celebrating what makes us peaceful and what connects us, and makes us unique as a community.¨
Many of the students who were already members continue to run because of the experience, the memories and the excitement of it all.
Madison Watson, junior and veteran of the Homecoming Court, said, ¨I wanted to do it because I thought it was a fun experience, and some fun competition.¨
Homecoming Court allows for all students to be a part of something important to the school. The students who win get a chance to show leadership and pride. The honor brings out spirit and determination in students and gives a fun way to show school spirit.
It makes my day better when I see my dog.
