Come to the Model UN interest meeting this Friday

The interest meeting for Leesville’s Model United Nations club will be after school on September 12 in room 121.

Everyone is welcome to attend the meeting, which will provide information about Model UN and club logistics. There will also be snacks.

Model UN focuses on improving students’ public speaking skills and introducing students to the process of international diplomacy.

Matthew Smith, senior, is Head Chair of the club. “From Model UN, I learned a great amount of knowledge about how diplomacy works internationally and how the world can come together to present solutions, for the goal of making everyone’s lives globally better,” said Smith.

The club meets every two weeks, to go over the process of Model UN conferences and practice debating. There are multiple types of debates, each of which have a specific structure to learn.

“I greatly enjoy the engagement of the club and the practice of moderated and unmoderated debates, where we argued about different issues,” said Smith.

Every year, Leesville Model UN attends a statewide conference along with hundreds of other students, located at UNC Chapel Hill. The conference is usually at the beginning of March, over the course of a weekend.

The club is community-centered, because the meetings allow members to get comfortable conversing with each other through debating. Additionally, the Model UN Chapel Hill conference provides a fun field trip experience which brings the community closer together.

“There is so much potential [in Model UN] for learning about debating and speech, global issues, and life skills that can serve you well. It can open many doors to you for other activities and for college,” said Smith.
