During the meeting, club officers Ella Dowling, junior, Haleigh Windell, junior, Abi Bagnel, junior, Slone Decker, junior, introduced themselves to the attendees. The officers gave the attendees a runthrough of what being a member of the sociology club would look like.
The inspiration for Co-Presidents Windell and Dowling to start the Leesville Road High School Sociology Club was rooted from their love of the sociology classes that they took. Windell said, “I loved the sociology course that I took my sophomore year. I thought that I could go deeper into sociology and build a larger community.”
The main purpose of the sociology club is to educate more people about sociology and to teach more people the basics of sociology and understanding societies.
Dowling said, “Learning how societies function helped me live in one better. I think it has made me more aware of my surroundings, and allows me to better analyze real life social situations.”
The Leesville Road High School Sociology Club will provide different activities for meeting attendees each Thursday. The club’s activities will consist of social experiments, debates, food drives, and norm breaking.
Norm breaking is any behavior that goes against the unwritten rules of society that societies use to determine what behaviors are acceptable. When people break social norms, they’re often rejected or ostracized by society.
All students are welcome to attend the meetings. Bi-weekly attendance is not mandatory but is encouraged for students who want to learn as much as possible about sociology. Contact Mr. Craddock (ccraddock@wcpss.net) or an officer with any questions regarding the club.
