Students who are a part of “The Mycenaean”, Leesville’s school newspaper, spend hours a week working on articles they hope a few people will find, read, and appreciate. Newspaper students do their best to leave their mark on Leesville through their diverse media outlets.
Some students at Leesville don’t even realize that there is a newspaper and will never even look at the content.
Some newspaper students leave school feeling like no one has seen the work that they put into the class and the Leesville community. However Mr. Broer, the teacher for the newspaper class, makes sure that students who have been a part of The Mycenaean can leave their mark on the school.
If you have been in newspaper for two or more semesters, you can paint a brick in Mr. Broer’s classroom when you graduate. Seniors spend weeks thinking about what to paint on their personal brick to make it perfect.
Students who have a leadership role in the class like, editor in chief or website editor often put their title on their brick. Students also put their name, the year they graduate, the college they are going to, and the year they are estimated to graduate from that college.
Some students paint something about a sport that they were involved in, their personality, their favorite place, or even their favorite meme.
Bennett Ange, a Leesville and newspaper alumni, painted her brick last year and put a lot of thought into it.
“My brick has my name, senior editor ‘26, unc ‘30, and a small picture of a Spotify looking music player with ‘Mycenaean Song of the Day,’” said Ange, via text.
All of these components were meaningful to Ange, especially “The Mycenaean” Song of the day. Ange said, “I added the song of the day because I created and added most of the songs to the Mycenaean 25-26 Song of the Day Playlist which is still up on Spotify.”
Foreign exchange students don’t have to be in newspaper for both semesters they are at Leesville to paint a brick.
These students usually paint the country they are from for people to remember who they are, and to leave a piece of their country with the class.
Painting a brick in Mr. Broer’s class is a big moment for writers in The Mycenaean –they know that they left a mark on Leesville both through their brick and through their content.

It makes my day better when someone compliments me.
