On September 9, Leesville had their first general membership PTSA meeting of the school year.
After an introduction of the PTSA board members led by President Katie Johnson, the meeting then unanimously voted to increase campus improvement funding from $7,000 to $11,000.
Johnson showed off the previous year’s accomplishments: new cafeteria furniture, a new PTSA website, and the courtyard renovation. Despite the amount spent on improvement from last year, there was still funds to carryover into the 2026-2027 school year.
Two major upcoming deadlines were mentioned as well. The Leesville service awards deadline is on September 22, available for anyone with at least 25 service hours. Farther out, the deadline for the PTA Reflection Arts Program is on October 23. This national competition was won by a Leesville student last year, showing how much talent is at Leesville.
The PTSA then launched their fundraiser for the year, named the Invest Campaign. This campaign will fund their initiatives to help staff and students and to improve the campus.
Ms. Worthey elaborated on some of the activities these funds will be used for. “That helps them fund things like honor roll treats for every kid. They’ll do some senior surprises, too.”
Aside from fun activities, these funds are badly needed by the school, as North Carolina is ranked 50th out of all states and Washington D.C. in per-pupil funding, and Wake County in particular ranks 110 out of 115 NC school districts in per-student spending. The PTSA will spend their funds trying to make up for this deficit, spending 57% of their funding on student programs and campus improvements.
