On Monday, August 24, 2026, Leesville Road High School began its first week of classes. Adjusting to high school takes time, as it is a big jump from middle school. Between crowded hallways, a heavier workload, and an overwhelming amount of clubs and extracurriculars to choose from, the transition presents unique challenges for incoming freshmen. 

For some, having an older sibling helps ease the nerves and makes the transition easier because they have spent time around older students and already know what to expect.

Gracie Lehr, freshman, said, “Adjusting to high school has been pretty easy because I have three older sisters in high school, so I’m kind of used to being around that environment.”

However, students without older siblings often face a bigger learning curve as they adapt to higher academic standards and an unfamiliar environment.

Nate Jones, freshman, said, “I was nervous coming into the week because everyone is older than you which is intimidating.”

With a population of 2,411 students, Leesville’s large size results in busy hallways and larger class sizes. Yet, that large student population is very diverse, filled with opportunities to connect.

Jones said, “I’ll say it was different from my other schools because there weren’t this many people here.”

Navigating high school becomes much easier when students find their community through shared interests and supportive peers.

Reflecting on the first week of high school, Jones said, “I think it was really good, everybody being diverse and it was just a nice experience.”
