Moving to a new place can be difficult for anyone; moving to a new country at 16 is an entirely different level of adversity. Senior Sara Molinero Torres dealt with exactly that when she left her life behind in Honduras to begin a new journey in North Carolina midway through her high school career.
Despite her initial nervousness, Molinero Torres made significant strides in building a community at Leesville Road High School. Having grown up attending a small trilingual school, she had the opportunity to learn English early on, which helped bridge the communication gap during her transition.
Molinero Torres chose to connect with the Leesville community through her lifelong love of soccer. The pitch became a place where language and culture merged into a shared goal.
“I tried out for the soccer team because I played in Honduras, and that definitely helped my social life and everything,” said Molinero Torres, senior. “It made me more comfortable around here; it allowed me to have friends.”
Her efforts to integrate didn’t stop at school. Over the summer, she stepped further out of her comfort zone by attending Young Life summer camp. It was there that she met fellow senior Cadhla O’Dwyer, with whom she became a quick close friend.
“She really only knew one person there, which I just thought was really cool because it’s hard to do a week with no phones and a bunch of people you don’t know,” Cadhla O’Dwyer, senior, recalled. “We met there and instantly clicked.”
While attending her school in Honduras, Molinero Torres studied German alongside English and Spanish. She practiced a multitude of German cultural celebrations, which created a curiosity that now stretches beyond North Carolina.
With three languages under her belt and a proven ability to thrive in new environments, Sara is now looking toward Germany as a potential destination for her next chapter.
Her fascination with German culture has evolved from a childhood interest into a plan for her future. Molinero Torres isn’t just dreaming of travel; she is actively pursuing a life abroad.
“I applied for a school in Germany,” Molinero Torres said. “I have always wanted to travel Europe, so it felt like the perfect place to live.”
While Sara’s academic and athletic pursuits keep her busy, her interests are as diverse as her background. She grew up with a lifelong love for the beach and traveling. However, her most disciplined hobby was one that defined her formative years: karate.
“I did it for almost my whole life,” she explained. “I stopped about six months ago, but I reached the rank of pre-black belt. That was a very important part of my life for most of my childhood.”
Throughout her time at Leesville, Sara Molinero Torres has successfully built a new life and community. By embracing different cultures and experiences, she has prepared herself for her next big chapter in Germany. Whether on the soccer field or in a new country, Sara’s ability to adapt will surely lead her to success.

It makes my day better to learn hello in a new language.
