Is CORTIS the new K-pop?

Big Hit Music’s newest powerhouse group, CORTIS, has officially solidified its status as the music industry’s next global leaders. After debuting on August 18, 2025, the group made history with their first EP, Color Outside the Lines, which peaked at No. 15 on the Billboard 200, one of the highest entries ever for a K-pop debut.

Now, they have shattered their own records with their second release, GREENGREEN. Within just 24 hours of its May 4, 2026, release, the album topped Hanteo’s daily sales chart with a staggering 1.19 million copies sold. At its core, GREENGREEN is a rejection of the status quo. While their debut was all about expressing the teenage experience in their own way, this album is a loud, confident manifesto.

The group uses a traffic light metaphor to tell their story: red represents all the people telling them to slow down, the music industry’s expectations, and the pressure to fit into a certain box; green represents the go signal through their raw energy and the freedom to do things their own way.

This thematic tug-of-war is most visible in the music video for the title track, REDRED. The members are seen navigating a boring, restrictive world, eventually breaking through with chaotic energy.

“We wanted to show that Green isn’t just a color; it’s a state of mind,” member Seonghyeon noted during the album’s global press conference. “It’s about moving forward even when the rest of the world is telling you to stop.”

By leaning into this high-concept storytelling, CORTIS has moved beyond the typical teenage rookie aesthetic, offering fans a deeper, more intellectual layer to their discography.

The commercial response to this album has been nothing short of historic. While it took their debut album six months to reach the two-million mark, GREENGREEN achieved double-million seller status in just four days. As of May 10, the album has surpassed 2.3 million copies in first-week sales.

This puts CORTIS in a high bracket, holding the second-highest initial sales record of 2026, trailing only behind their senior labelmates, BTS. On the digital front, REDRED has proven to be a public favorite, climbing to No. 3 on the Melon Top 100.

What truly separates CORTIS from the rest of the new artists in the industry is its identity as a young production team. All five members, Martin, James, Juhoon, Seonghyeon, and Keonho, hold production and songwriting credits across the album.

Much of the album was shaped during a songwriting camp in Los Angeles, where the members co-wrote tracks to ensure the sound remained authentic to their own lives. This hands-on approach has earned them praise from outlets like Rolling Stone, which noted the group’s “raw, unpolished sensibility” as a refreshing departure from K-pop’s typical perfectionism.

By leaning into high-concept storytelling and maintaining creative control, CORTIS has moved beyond the typical rookie aesthetic, offering fans a deeper, more intellectual layer to their discography.
