Are gym classes at LRHS actually helpful?

At LRHS, gym classes are one of the easiest parts of the school day. Many students describe gym as a “free class” because it’s easy to pass and doesn’t add a lot of pressure compared to academic courses.

However, gym classes may be even more helpful than they first appear because they provide both physical and social benefits.

One reason why gym classes are helpful is that they give students a break from the stress of their regular schedule. After sitting in classrooms for hours, students have a chance to move around, be active, and even relax. This change of pace can improve students’ moods and help them recharge for the rest of the day, especially in a school environment where students already feel pressure from grades and homework.

“I think gym class is helping my stress because I don’t really have to do anything,” said Lilly Norton, freshman.

Another benefit of gym class is the social side. Since the class is interactive, students often get the ability to spend time with their friends and even meet new people along the way. This can help students feel more comfortable and connected at school, which will overall create a more enjoyable environment.

Mollie Matney, a freshman, says, “Ms. Tortorella is a great gym teacher and always ensures the students are interactive and participating in activities.”

Overall, gym classes at LRHS seem to be more helpful than harmful. While some students may see them as easy classes, that easygoing environment can actually play an important role in reducing stress, promoting physical activity, and helping students build friendships, which makes gym class not just helpful but necessary.
