Which is better, the ACT or the SAT?

The SAT and ACT are both rigorous tests that give scores that students submit to colleges, impacting acceptance into colleges. The SAT has a reading section and a math section, while the ACT has a math, reading, english and science section.

The state mandated ACT is coming up on March 5, 2026. Every student in North Carolina is required to take the ACT in their junior year of high school.

On the other hand, the SAT is optional and requires a student to sign up on their own outside of school.

They both have their differences, and their pros and cons.

Many students, though, prefer the SAT for various reasons. One reason is that they find the questions easier and more straightforward than the ACT, feeling like they have more time to answer the questions.

Keeley Price, junior, said, “I personally prefer the SAT because I feel like I have longer for each section on the test… I feel like the questions on the SAT are easier and more clear than on the ACT.”

Another reason some students prefer the SAT is because the SAT has no science section, unlike the ACT which has a required science section that impacts the final score.

“I really preferred the SAT over the ACT because I absolutely hated the science section. The SAT had only reading and math which people are actually able to study for, but for the science section on the ACT, I just felt unprepared because there was no true way to study for it,” said Avery Pederson, senior.
