Overview of the LRHS Boys Tennis team tryouts

The LRHS boys’ tennis team began its season on February 25. So far, they have had competitive tryouts and practiced for their first successful match.

Tryouts took place on February 17, 18, and 19.  Players had to perform serves, volleys, forehands, and backhands. Additionally, players played a practice match. “Tryouts went really well, it was great to be back with the team, lots of new guys tried out,“ said Kyle Lang, senior. Tryouts ended on the 17th, and practices started the next day.

Practices are Monday through Thursday. During practice, players warm up with some jogging and stretches. Then they do drills like hitting down the line and cross-court. Then they end with conditioning. “We would do a lot of reps and make sure we really put in the effort,” said Jack Goatcher, sophomore.

The team made sure to put in effort to prepare for their upcoming match. The first match took place on Wednesday, February 25, at 3:30 pm. It was a home match against Wakefield. Leesville won all six singles matches and all four doubles matches.

Tennis helps build skills like teamwork and communication. Although tennis is often an individual sport, players learn how to support their teammates from the sidelines. Tennis also helps teach how to communicate with people one-on-one when you play doubles.

“They’re really good guys. It’s a lot of fun. You have a lot of fun playing matches, and we’re normally pretty good, so it’s fun to win,” said Lang.

“Tennis is a good way to meet new people, and being involved in a sport, especially tennis, is a good thing to be a part of,” said Goatcher. Boys who play tennis and who are looking for a competitive and supportive team environment can try out next year.
