Is a lot of homework really beneficial?

Every night, students open their backpacks and pull out their folders, but most of us probably have the same question: How much homework is too much? Homework is great for helping students better understand the lessons. Others feel buried under assignments with no time for sleep, free time, or family.

Many teachers follow guidelines on how long homework should take, but in reality, it doesn’t always match their plans. A single worksheet can be easy for one student but confusing for another. When each class assigns just a bit of homework, it can add up quickly and take hours to complete. “I don’t have a lot of free time, so after I’ve spent hours on homework, I just have to shower and go to sleep,” said Maddie Beyer, sophomore.

“When you take a lot of AP classes, they weigh more on your GPA, so if you don’t do the homework, it affects your grade a lot more. But it’s really hard to keep up when you already have so much homework for other classes,” said Presley Dies, junior.

Too much homework can cause stress, lack of sleep, and rushing through work just to finish it. On the other hand, some students believe that a reasonable amount of homework helps them practice the necessary skills they need to learn for tests.

The real issue isn’t whether homework is good or bad, but whether the amount assigned is too much. Students need time to relax, join clubs or sports, and spend time with family. If homework regularly keeps students up late or makes them feel overwhelmed, it stops serving its purpose and can even harm them.

Overall, homework can be effective when it is limited, clear, and meaningful. Schools and teachers should communicate with students and families to ensure that homework assignments support learning without taking over students’ entire days—allowing them to succeed academically while maintaining a healthy, balanced life.
