Earth and Sustainability club makes a difference behind the scenes

The Earth and Sustainability Club is one of the quieter groups at LRHS, but its impact is easy to see. This lesser-known club is made up of students who care about the environment and want to make a noticeable difference in the environment and community.

Most of the club’s work is hands-on. Students pick up trash in areas on the LRHS campus, help clean nearby spaces, and help with building or improving our environment around the area. Their projects might not draw a lot of attention, but they help keep the campus cleaner and more welcoming for everyone.

“I think it’s important to learn about what we can do to make our earth better,” said Addison Brockman, junior.

During meetings, club members talk about general issues and issues in the area surrounding the environment, like waste, pollution, and sustainability. The club members then turn those conversations into action by organizing cleanups and helping build things around the area. The club promotes recycling and encourages students to think more about how their everyday choices affect the environment.

The Earth and Sustainability Club also offers students a sense of community. Students from different grades and backgrounds come together, all sharing the goal to better the planet, starting with our own school. The club is very relaxed and welcomes everyone, so you do not need any previous experience or knowledge to join.

“These clubs exist to teach, not just to recruit experts, and they value your willingness to help more than your current knowledge,” said Ruth Meteferia, senior.

The club’s members believe that small actions can build up over time. Each cleanup and new member helps move LRHS in the right direction. For more details and announcements, students can check the club’s Instagram. Meetings are held on the first Friday of every month in room 1201 at 2:30 pm. Any student interested is encouraged to attend.
