A wrap up to the LRHS swim and dive season

As the spring arrives, the LRHS swim and dive team has wrapped up its 2025–26 season after the 8A State Championship on February 14, 2026, at Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary, North Carolina.

At the 8A State Championship, the LRHS girls’ team finished 16th overall, while the boys had an outstanding performance, placing third overall. These results marked a great end to the season.

The LRHS swim and dive team has athletes from all grade levels, including notable captains who helped guide new and returning swimmers through another competitive season.

The team is led by Stephen Shingler, whom swimmers describe as honest and supportive. “Mr. Shingler is very nice, and he’s going to tell you straight up — he’s honest. It’s good,” said Cole Nelson, junior.

For many students at LRHS, swim and dive season is a big part of their high school experience. It gives them a chance to represent LRHS, build strong friendships, and challenge themselves not just in school, but in the pool as well. “I think it’s helped me to be able to make new friends with a lot of people, especially the underclassmen like freshmen and sophomores,” said senior captain, Emma Thomas.

Throughout the season, swimmers and divers practiced regularly to improve their times and learn new techniques. They competed in meets against other schools locally, and some swimmers and divers even qualified to compete against schools around the state. Their hard work paid off, showing at the 8A State Championship.

As this season has officially come to an end, many swimmers and divers are already looking ahead to future seasons. Underclassmen are planning to return and continue to swim, and some are hoping to qualify and compete at higher-level meets.

The team also hopes to welcome interested new students who want to try out for the team. Kate Marks, a freshman, said, “My first year on the team has been really good. The upperclassmen have been really nice,” she added, “as I get older, I’d like to be a good role model for the underclassmen coming in.”

With the LRHS swim and dive season coming to an end, student-athletes and coaches can look back at months of hard work, early morning practices, and challenging meets. Seniors are saying goodbye to their last high school season, while younger teammates are saying hello to their new journey. No matter what they placed, all athletes tried their best in the events they competed in.
