For Valentine’s Day, the LRHS intermediate chorus and Capital Pride will be preparing for their annual Singing Valentines. On February 13th, they visited various classrooms to perform songs for students. Students purchase a Singing Valentine for friends—or for situationships—and the chorus will go around the school to serenade students with love songs.
Singing Valentines is a fundraiser for the choral department; it raises funds for class materials and travel. Chorus students in the intermediate and Capital Pride classes have practiced the choral arrangement of the songs in the last few weeks to prepare.
This year, the chorus students performed songs the department has performed for many years, such as “That’s What Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction and “I Want It That Way” by Backstreet Boys. They performed new songs like “Kiss Me” by Sixpence None the Richer, “I’ll Be There for You” by The Rembrandts, and “Count on Me” by Bruno Mars.
Although the idea of being serenaded in front of their entire class may embarrass some students, many find it fun and endearing to receive a Singing Valentine. The chorus students spend a lot of time perfecting the songs and are excited to sing for their classmates.
“I honestly like seeing how people get embarrassed by it. I find it funny, but also cute, and I think it’s a very enjoyable time for everybody,” said Hannah Holder, senior.
While the time to buy Singing Valentines has passed, there are more ways to support the LRHS chorus. They have the Coffee House performances and their winter and spring concerts. Check out their Weebly site to find more information about their choirs and performances.
