Do students prefer asynchronous days over makeup days?

For the school year 2025-2026, Wake County has utilized asynchronous days instead of using banked days for days school is off due to weather.

In previous years, days that were intended for a teacher workday or holiday breaks were taken and used as make-up days for days lost due to inclement weather.

Students like this change for a variety of reasons. One of these reasons is that students can complete their work for their classes in a much shorter amount of time than a whole day of school would take.

Ally Schuh, junior, said, “I really liked having asynchronous days. I would wake up around 9 AM and do my work for my classes, and then be done by 10:30, 11 at the latest. This lets me have way more time to do other things during my day and be more productive.”

Another reason students prefer asynchronous days over going in for make-up days is that it doesn’t take off from other breaks students have throughout the school year.

“I hated last year when teacher workdays would become school days because of makeup days. It ended up making the second semester multiple 5-day weeks straight without any breaks, which became overwhelming and stressful,” said Jha Thomson, junior.

In case of any upcoming weather that may occur this year, Wake County will continue to use asynchronous days for students to keep up with school work and keep everyone safe.
