Funny Story is a romance novel by NYT bestselling author Emily Henry. Published in 2024, it quickly attracted a large BookTok fanbase.

The story follows Daphne Vincent, a children’s librarian whose fiancé, Peter, dumps her the day before their wedding to be with his childhood best friend, Petra. Heartbroken, Daphne leaves her fiancé’s house and moves in with none other than Petra’s ex-boyfriend, Miles, whom she dumped to run off with Peter.
After the initial chaos, Daphne and Miles slowly start to put themselves back together. In the process, they find a genuine friendship and, eventually, a genuine love.
Overall, I thought the book was very cute. Set during a sun-soaked Michigan summer, Henry definitely conveys solid beach-read vibes throughout the whole book, making it very easy to read but also easy to put down if need be.
My favorite part about the book wasn’t actually the main storyline, but the stories and development of the side characters. From Miles’s spunky and vibrant sister, Julia, to Daphne’s sarcastic and witty coworker, Ashleigh, the side characters feel 3-dimensional.I quickly became invested in their lives.
My one complaint about the book was the “spice”-or sexual content- level. Funny Story is a romance novel, so I was expecting some spice, but I felt the level in the novel doesn’t really add to the plot; it feels kind of thrown in there for sensation. I ended up skipping over a few pages to get back to the actual storytelling.
Overall, Funny Story is a nice book. I wouldn’t say it’s worth the massive amounts of hype it gets online, but it’s perfect for someone looking for a funny, lighthearted summer read.

It makes my day better when I listen to a good playlist.
