Addams Family Auditions

Leesville’s theatre department is currently in the middle of audition week for their spring musical, The Addams Family. Auditions were held on Monday, December 1, and Tuesday, December 2, with callbacks on Thursday, December 4. The cast list is expected to be posted either on the afternoon of Friday, December 5, or the morning of Saturday, December 6. The audition panel consists of director/wardrobe director Mr. Hurley, musical director Ms. Dickens, choreographer Ms. Carr, and technical director for hard tech (set, lights, sound, etc) Ms. Wrayno.

For auditions, students had to prepare 30-60 seconds of a song from a modern musical, a 30-60 second modern and comedic monologue, and memorize and practice roughly 30 seconds of a dance created by Mrs. Carr.

Lillian Hubbard, freshman, auditioned on Monday. She said, “[It helps] practicing a lot, and like I could go to Mrs. Carr’s room and practice the dance, and get feedback from peers.” Hubbard has been involved in theatre for two and a half years and really enjoys it. She also hopes to continue with theatre throughout the rest of high school.

Aside from the actors, tech, mainly the production team, is also preparing for auditions. Meghan Lamm, junior, will be stepping into the role of stage manager for the musical, as well as for auditions. Lamm said, “I am the stage manager, so I sign people in… I make sure Hurley and Wrayno know… who people are, and I also help play their audition music.” As the stage manager, Lamm is in charge of managing the actors and tech crews. She said, “I act kind of as a bridge between actors and tech, and I make sure tech knows what Hurley is thinking basically.”

Many actors, typically juniors and seniors, have lots of theatre experience under their belt, both inside and outside of Leesville. One of those seniors is Ragine Griffin, who has been involved in theatre since middle school; however, most of that theatre experience has taken place at Leesville. Griffin said, “Just be yourself. I know that it can be a bit nerve-racking with auditions and trying to compare yourself to other people, but honestly, if you just bring forth to the table what you have, that is enough.” Although she doesn’t plan on majoring in theater in college, Griffin hopes to minor in theater.

Lyricist Andrew Lippa and playwrights Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice wrote The Addams Family. The musical follows the strange Addams family, which consists of parents Gomez and his wife, Morticia, who are madly in love with one another. They also have two children, a dark and moody teenage daughter named Wednesday, and her little brother, who she finds quite annoying at times, named Pugsley. Other family members include the sentimental Uncle Fester and the wise grandmother named Grandmama.

In the musical, Wednesday meets a human boy named Lucas Beineke, whom her parents are unsure of due to him being a human. Lucas and Wednesday fall deeply in love with each other, and they arrange a dinner with the Addams and Lucas’ parents, Mal and Alice. Chaos ensues as the different families clash. During this scene, and many others throughout the course of the musical, lots of fun numbers help guide the story along, including “When You’re An Addams,” “One Normal Night,” and “Crazier Than You.”

You can see the Leesville theatre department’s production of The Addams Family in the spring semester from April 15-18, 2026, with rehearsals beginning in December of this year.
