The Benefits of Taking Wake Tech Classes

Wake Tech Community College is a public college located in North Carolina, open to people of all ages to further their education. One aspect of Wake Tech that many North Carolina students use is the college’s Career and College Promise (CCP) program. This program offers eligible high school students a chance to earn college credit or credentials for employment through dual enrollment. The program is tuition free and meets high school graduation requirements with college level courses.

Many high school students take classes at Wake Tech, either in person or online (or a mix of both), during the school year or the summer months to earn credits towards college. The college’s dual enrollment program offers courses such as English, Math, Science, and History as well as Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses. These courses allow students to focus on earning a degree for a future career path they may hope to pursue one day.

Hannah Holder, senior, is currently enrolled in Wake Tech’s General Biology and English 112 course as part of the college’s dual enrollment program. She said, “I consider [taking classes at Wake Tech] beneficial because it removes the big stigma around college classes being ten times harder than high school, and it just helps you get into the collegiate mindset.” Holder explained that Wake Tech classes do not count towards your high school classes, however a positive is that it boosts your high school GPA. Holder said, “I decided to take Wake Tech classes because [in] AP classes I was not succeeding too much… in Wake Tech classes, I found the work load to be more spread out and less rushed.”

Some students will take many classes at Wake Tech and will enter college with at least one semester of school already under their belt and completed. Students take courses at Wake Tech that they would normally take as an AP (Advanced Placement) class here at Leesville for many different reasons. It could be that they find the specific AP class at Leesville to be too challenging, or it could just simply be that they want to earn some college credits.

Jack Gajowski, senior, previously took Wake Tech’s Macroeconomics and Introduction to Business courses last year and is planning on taking the college’s Microeconomics class next semester. He said, “[I decided to take classes at Wake Tech because] I wanted a [class] period off as a junior and I thought having a professor would be a little bit easier than having just a teacher here [at Leesville].” Gajowski explains that his courses were all online and he was able to learn and work at his own pace, however the work was graded harder than an AP class at Leesville would be graded.

Gajowski said, “I learned a lot [at Wake Tech]… there is a lot of classes they don’t offer here [at Leesville] and it taught me stuff about business that I wouldn’t have previously learned.”

The CCP Program at Wake Tech Community College offers many positive opportunities and advantages for high school students who want to get a head start for college. The dual enrollment program also allows for high school students to gain early college experience and be better prepared for what it’s like taking a college course.
