Off-year elections 

The results from the first major elections since President Trump’s return to the white house are in. Democrats won the votes in third major races on November 5,2025: the New York City Mayoral race, the governor’s races in New Jersey and Virginia.

These elections are usually referred to as “off-year”  elections since they fall between the major midterms, which are used to determine the control of Congress. 

Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has been circulating on numerous social media platforms after directly addressing President Trump during his victory speech. “I have four words for you: turn the volume up,” said Zhoran Mamdani. 

The new electees have big plans for their states or cities.  

Zohran has used his platform to promote Universal childcare, Fast and Free buses, and city-run grocery stores.

Zohran Mamdani defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Not only dominating in debates but also giving a fresh approach to the position. 

Governor Mikie Sherrill’s platform promotes affordability, housing, Health Care costs, and Abortion and Reproductive Rights. 

Virginia’s first  Female Governor, Abigail Spanberger, who not only served in the CIA but also served three terms in the U.S. congress.  Spanberger is looking to push back against all of the “bad policies” that are coming from the White House. 

California voters said “yes” to Proposition 50, which will allow redistricting in the state to fight back against Trump’s gerrymandering attempt.
