When Should you Actually Decorate for Christmas?

The annual debate has begun: When exactly is it the right time to start Christmas decorating? There are some who strongly believe that Christmas decorations should skip Thanksgiving decorations and just automatically whip out the Christmas decor right after Halloween. While others wait till mid december to start decorating.

Clara Hook, sophomore, typed, ¨Christmas decorating on November 1st is utterly perfect, and Mariah Carey is defrosted by the stroke of midnight on October 31st so by the time you feel that little chill on November 1st the Christmas tree is already up.¨

Tradition and culture are some major factors that influence when decorations are put up. Advent is important for many christians and with its schedule, the Christmas season starts earlier. Advent is generally just a season of preparation, and it begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas.

For others, it’s simply plain out love for the holiday and the way putting up the decorations automatically gets them in the Christmas spirit.

For the people who don’t skip over Thanksgiving, Black Friday usually marks the best day for putting up Christmas decor. Many businesses and schools keep the day after Thanksgiving as a day off making it a long weekend. The long weekend makes a good clear transition from one major holiday to the next major holiday.

Maxwell Douglas, sophomore, said, ¨I think it’s appropriate to start decorating after Thanksgiving because it’s not Christmas yet and Thanksgiving is still a big holiday.¨

Christmas decorating is more important to some than it is to others. There is no right or wrong time to start decorating for Christmas.
