How to start a club

During the first two months of school, the stairwells and hallways are littered with club ballyhoo. School clubs provide students with opportunities to explore their interests, develop new skills, and connect with peers beyond the classroom. From academic teams to honor societies and community service groups, Leesville has tons of clubs to choose from.

Leesville has had many clubs throughout its existence, with some, like the Latin club, existing since its opening, while others are just starting, such as SpeakHER, which was approved at the end of September, and Turning Point USA, which recently held its interest meeting.

Starting a club is easier than you think: The only big requirements are motivation and specific ideas.

Isabel Snyder, SpeakHER Co-President and junior, said, “We wanted to create a safe space for women in high school. My friend Alexis and I sat down, and we had to brainstorm what we actually wanted the club to do and the overall timeline of our meetings”.

Once you have your ideas in order, you have to find a club advisor. It’s always best to find an advisor who is interested in the ideas behind the club. Ellie Salgado, Turning Point USA founder and freshman, said, “It was great to find an advisor who values the club just as much as I do.”

After your club advisor is on board, you have to make a simple club constitution and get 20 signatures of students who are genuinely interested in the club (template linked here).

Also, be sure to pay close attention to your club application status, as sometimes are issues. Snyder said, “It took a while for them to get back with us, so we had to email a couple times our advisor and Mr Vaughn to keep the process going,”.

All club applications are due on October 31 and can be emailed to Mr. Vaughn or delivered to his office.
