Everything You Need to Know About North Carolina’s Free College Application Week

The class of 2026 is currently working on their college applications as deadlines are quickly approaching; some already even have passed.

Every October, schools across North Carolina participate in the Countdown to College Week. The annual event is designed to help students take important steps toward their post high school plans. The week focuses mainly on college applications and financial aid, by providing tools and support for students.

Over 40 schools across North Carolina are participating in this year’s free application week. The week will begin at 7:30 a.m. on October 20 and run through October 26 til 5:00 p.m.

Lily Myers, senior, said, “I have already been preparing for the NC Countdown to College Week. I also have already submitted my applications for the October 15 deadline. I plan to apply to East Carolina University and maybe a few other schools as well during the free application period.”

Matthew Smith, senior, said, “I have been working on my applications for most of my schools, they are almost ready to be submitted. The only college I plan on applying to during the free application week is East Carolina University, and it will be my safety school.”

In order to take advantage of free applications students must create or log into their College for North Carolina (CFNC) account. According to cfnc.org, “[CFNC is] a free online service provided by the state of North Carolina that helps students and families plan, apply, and pay for college and other post-secondary education.”

It is also required that students complete the Residency Determination Service (RDS), so they have their Residency Certification Number (RCN) on hand for their North Carolina in-state applications. It is important to gather needed documents before applying such as your transcript, personal essay, supplemental essays or supplementary materials, and test scores which will make the process more efficient.

Only applications to participating colleges that are submitted via the CFNC hub will qualify for the application fee waiver. It is also highly encouraged for students to complete FAFSA forms to gain as much financial aid as possible. Students can enter this information into their applications; however, the actual priority deadline varies depending on which college you are applying to. So, it is smarter to go ahead and complete any financial aid early, to ensure you receive as much money as possible.
