Cheerleaders missing out on games

Going to sports games, such as basketball games or football games, is popular among students in high school. They get to dress up in the theme of the game, go hang out with their friends, and watch and support their school’s sports teams. This is a core memory of high school that people remember. The cheerleaders on the sidelines, though, miss out on this aspect of high school.

They face the crowd for a majority of football games and cheer frequently during basketball games. Do they feel like they are missing a part of their teen years? Do they ever wish they could go to the game and just watch?

Some of the cheerleaders miss being able to participate in being in the student section and dressing up according to the theme.

Brooke Costello, junior, said, “When I was on JV, I was able to go to the games and not have to cheer. I miss being able to dress up like the theme and be at the game with friends in the student section.”

Other cheerleaders prefer cheering during the games instead of just watching the game.

“I love cheering because I am right on the sidelines of the game and get to see it up close. I also get to see my friends who aren’t on the cheer team during halftime which is nice,” said Sydney Champion, junior.

Brad Zubela, sophomore, said, “Last year I wasn’t even on the cheer team, and now I am on varsity, so I experienced both. I prefer cheering over being in the student section because I feel even more active in being involved in the school community.”

No matter if a student is participating in the games or just watching from the sidelines or stands, all of these help promote Leesville and get involved.
