The Leesville women’s golf team had their first match on the second day of school, Tuesday, August 26.
With the conference change from the CAP 6 to the CAP 8, the ladies were not quite sure what to expect, as they had never played Corinth Holders and Rolesville before.
In a typical golf match, five golfers play, and the three lowest scores for each team are added together for that teams total. Whichever team has the lowest score wins.
This match was a little different because there were a few inexperienced players. These girls had never played a match before. There were also three experienced players.
Madeline Gransden (junior), Mackenzie Muller (sophomore), and Autumn Benish (senior), were the more advanced players so they played. The three new players, Samantha Gunn (junior), Hazel Renigar (sophomore), and Sadie Crafts (sophomore) shadowed the other girls.
At the start of the match, Benish was anxious, “I was really nervous because I don’t do well with heat, and it was really hot,” said Benish.
On the other hand, Muller was excited, and ready to get the season started. Muller said, “I was a little nervous, but I was more excited than anything.”
The team ended up finishing in second place, one point behind Broughton. Gransden shot a 52, Muller got a 38, and Benish finished the match with a 58.
Benish was happy with her drives and fairway shots but was disappointed in her performance near the green.
Muller had fun in her group of other skilled golfers but thought her putting could have been better.
Gunn enjoyed the first match and learned a lot. “I learned a lot and I saw how everything worked so it made me less nervous for my first match,” said Gunn. “The girls did really well, but they showed me that they’re not perfect, so I don’t have to be perfect.”
Knowing you don’t have to be perfect boosted Gunn’s confidence and made her ready to play.

It makes my day better when someone compliments me.
