Teacher spotlight: Ms. Pleasant

Most of us have had that one teacher whose class has zero decoration, or when they start teaching, students just can’t help but fall asleep or tune them out. However, there’s a teacher at Leesville who’s quite the opposite —a teacher who makes her classroom fun, making her students always feel like they’re in an educational party.

Ms. Pleasant is a Food and Nutrition teacher who’s been at Leesville for three years. When asked how she gets her students hyped, she said, “Always music, and then just pep talks, positive pep talks. The power of positivity is amazing. People need to remember that.”

By making a positive environment, her class becomes inviting for students, making them excited to come to class and wanting her room to feel like a family.“I just am who I am, kindness, happiness, never negative attitude. My space is a reflection of me, so it’s bright and happy,” said Pleasant.

Since she also teaches kids how to cook, Ms. Pleasant wants her students to make cooking a time where kids can communicate with each other and open up. “Food will always get people to talk…Cooking and eating, just sitting down and looking at each other, and just talking about things. It’s just food,” said Pleasant.

She also gets her students to communicate with each other by doing fun activities on Fridays and sitting down in a circle to talk about everyone’s day. “I just treat y’all as your equals, and family and friends, and so setting the atmosphere of comfortability for people, people will talk,” said Pleasant

Ms. Pleasant wants her students to be energetic; she wants them to get up and do things, not just sit silently and not interact with other people. “I’m hands on. We’re doing. We do things…It’s not just sit and get. You get up and you do,” said Pleasant

Ms. Pleasant loves helping her students succeed, and having a good learning space encourages her students to do more.
