Students Speak Out About How They Are Feeling at The End of The Year

The year is coming to an end and there is only a week left. For seniors, there are probably some nerves about what comes next, but for many underclassmen, it is exciting to be out of school and have a whole summer with no school work and no responsibilities.

Isabel Santana, freshman, has enjoyed her first year of high school, and has liked it much more than middle school.

“[My first year of high school] was definitely way better than anything middle school was. I made so many new friends, sports were really fun, and I just had a way better experience,” said Santana.

Santana enjoyed all of the social aspects of school, like football games, but didn’t really like the extra workload that comes with high school.

Santana said she will miss all of the seniors that are graduating, but is excited for the summer and sophomore year.  “I went from year round to traditional, so I get a way longer summer break.”

That was my favorite part about moving schedules, but the summer can get kind of boring after a while.

Contradictory to most people, Lyla Eisner, sophomore, thinks that this year has been easier than last year.

Her classes have been easier, and she has had a year more of experience in school, which makes navigating high school easier.

Eisner’s favorite parts of school so far have been all of the activities that she is a part of.

Eisner said, “[My favorite part has been] being a part of clubs and activities, like soccer and going to football games and stuff.”

Eisner is very excited for summer and has many trips planned, one of which being Puerto Rico (I’m jealous).

Even with a hopeful summer, she is very nervous for junior year, because the classes are supposed to be harder, and more stressful.

Ben Cooper, junior, can attest and said that junior year is much harder than his previous high school years.

Cooper said, “I feel like this year has been a lot harder than freshman and sophomore year because I’m taking a lot harder classes, so I’ve had to put a lot more work in. But it’s also been a lot of fun and also really rewarding.”

Cooper’s favorite part of this year is just doing the everyday thing of going to lunch with his friends. Cooper’s least favorite part is the homework.

Because of Cooper’s harder classes, he also gets more homework. AP stat is the class that has given him the most work outside of school.

Cooper is excited for senior year. When I asked him if he was nervous for senior year, he said that he isn’t because he’s gotten all of the hard work out of the way as a junior.

“I’m super excited for all the senior activities, and of course graduation is gonna be a lot of fun,” said Cooper.

Cooper is going to miss all of the friends he has made in his classes this year and is sad he has to leave them behind.

Easten Hepp, senior, thinks that this year has been very different from the rest of her high school career because everyone knows each other at this point. They all share the same sadness that they are leaving, but also the excitement of discovering what comes next.

Hepp said, “This year has been different from the rest of my high school career, because I feel like my grade specifically has been more cohesive, and we all know each other now.”

Hepp’s favorite part of high school has been playing sports and making all of the friends that she has.

Hepp doesn’t have much advice for younger classmates, other than don’t procrastinate. Students around the school have heard the same advice for many years but most don’t take it seriously. Hepp is one of those students.

Hepp will be attending Appalachian State University, after high school and is pretty nervous, but her excitement is masking her nerves.

There are many rumors about things that may or may not live in the Appalachian mountains, but Hepp does not believe in any of them.

Through these four years of high school there will be many changes, whether it’s a big change in friendship or going to college, or just something simple like new classes in January, there will be excitement and nervousness, and lots of people to help you through it all.
