On May 16-17, North Carolina A&T hosted the annual North Carolina High School Athletic Association(NCHSAA) 1A-4A Track and Field state championships. Athletes from each region of North Carolina showcased their talents, leading to personal records and blazing times.
The competition began for 1A and 3A on Friday, May 16, featuring athletes from smaller schools in North Carolina.
In the 1A division, there were outstanding performances on both women’s and men’s sides. There were some standout performances, especially in the distance events including the 1600, 3200, and 4×800.
On the women’s side, Swain County dominated three out of the four distance events with Annie Lewis and Arizona Blankenship beating their competition by over 10 seconds in the mile.
For the Men’s, Corvian Community School took the win in both the 1600 and 4×800. Carson Williams took the win, running a 4:12.87, winning by less than a second in this tight race. Corvian took the win in the 4×800 by 4 seconds.
Swain County was the overall team winner for women’s, and Corvian Community School took home the title for men’s track and field.
Competing at the Aggie Stadium alongside the 1A schools were 3A, where some of the best athletes in the nation ran.
Not only was there blazing competition in the 110 m hurdles by Georgia commit Le’ezra Brown and Texas Tech commit Tayman Howell, but the women’s 200m winner Jalee Brown all came from the same team, helping lead to a 3-peat win for Dudley High School for both women’s and men’s.
The following Saturday, the competition continued. While there were a few delays due to the weather conditions, it didn’t hold these athletes back.
In 2A the men’s sprinter relays captivated the audience with smooth handoffs and great performances from athletes like Ja’neil Harris, who won both the 100 m and 200m races. For the distance boys, the wind played a crucial role in some of these races. Seaforth dominated all 4 distance events.
The winning men’s team is Seaforth High School, and for women’s, Cummings.
For the 4A, there were exceptional times by UNC Charlotte commit Jordan Henderson from Heritage, setting yet another personal best, winning the 100mh and placing 2nd in the 300 m hurdles. The fight between first and second for the women’s 400 with Ataja Vasquez from Southeast Guilford taking first.
