This year’s Powderpuff game was nothing short of unusual.
Typically, Leesville’s annual Powderpuff game is held during or right after football season, so sometime in the fall. Football players have the opportunity to either coach their grade level’s team or be a cheerleader.
But this year, due to bad weather, the Powderpuff game was postponed to May 20, just after the spring sports season was over.
When the players began to arrive, only the junior and senior teams had enough to field a whole team. The freshman team only had seven players show up, and the sophomore team had even fewer.
The freshmen were disappointed that they wouldn’t be able to play in a real game, but they could scrimmage the seniors. Five seniors agreed to join their team for a 15-minute scrimmage against the remaining seniors. Even with the added players to their team, the full senior team scored on every possession.
Faith Holderman, freshman, said, “I think it was fin., I think we all expected more than what happened. I wish more of our team would have showed up, but at least we still got to play and gain experience.”
The juniors allowed the few sophomores who were there to join their team, so the championship match was the sophomores and juniors versus the seniors.
The junior/sophomore team ended up winning handily, with three running touchdowns from junior, Gabby Cueto. The game ended with a final score of 6 to 24.
Molly Zuburg, senior, said, “Powderpuff has always been really fun for me, just to be competitive and hang out with my friends and do a different sport. This year was a little bit annoying because we did not get the three-peat that we were looking for. But we’re counting it as a win because the other grades had to combine in order to beat us.”
Hopefully, next year, Powderpuff will return to normal, and there will be more students both playing and attending.
