Student COuncil campaigning at LRHS

As we reach the end of the 2024-2025 school year, class councils begin preparing for what’s ahead. Student governments are beginning campaigns and elections for the 2025-2026 school year. Campaigning begins April 14th and lasts until April 18th, 2025. Ballots were released to students on April 17 at 7:30 am and closed the following day at 8:00 pm.

Students are preparing for elections by making posters, stickers, pins, and more. Along with physical campaigning, students are also using social media to spread the word. “It helps to reach people who I wouldn’t normally reach at school,” typed Aiden Roberts, sophomore. While campaigning, it’s important to reach your target audiences. For example, those running for Sophomore Class Council shouldn’t target juniors and seniors, as only rising sophomores can vote for that class.

Student government at Leesville is a big part of many students’ goals and lives. So, running for an office position can feel personal or emotional, especially when running against someone else.

“Don’t think of them as your competitors, because they’re like actual people too, and they’re also going to want to feel involved in school,” said Eva Wilson, junior.

Dozens of students have worked since their freshman year to have the ability to run for an office, and the advice from multiple upperclassmen is to respect and appreciate everyone’s effort. Although competitors can be intimidating, it’s important not to let the competition pressure you into quitting.

“If there are other competitors who have a better chance than you, that shouldn’t mean anything to you…I thought there were better people who were going to get it and not me, and I ended up being one of the people,” said Wilson.

Student councils are a big responsibility and take a lot of dedication from the students. It’s important to remember competitors are running for the same reasons as you and everyone has an equal chance of success. v
