With roughly between 100-200 million songs available for music listeners, many people will have different music tastes and preferences. But, imagine that you can only listen to five songs for the rest of your life. The days of scrolling through recommended songs are over, now you’re limited to five songs for the rest of your life.
Music plays an important role in many people’s lives and is something very present in mine. There is always music playing in my house, whether it be a family favorite or something I blast in the morning when I’m getting ready. Because of this, I have a vast musical taste and am very opinionated when it comes to music.
If I were to only listen to five songs for the rest of my life, these would be my choices (they are not in order of favoritism):
“Stolen Dance” by Milky Chance
Honestly, I think we all remember when this was all that played on the radio. I have loved this song since the first time I heard it, and it has remained one of my favorite songs since. No matter what mood I’m in when I listen to this song, it always makes me happier. It’s also one of those songs that you can’t help but dance to because it’s so upbeat. In contrast, the song is actually on the more sad side. The singer talks about how he is basically longing for a lost love and wanting to relive the happier times through the metaphor of dancing. I’ve always found it funny that many people will agree that they interpret this song as happy and upbeat, but that the meaning behind the song is sad and reminiscent.
“All I Wanted” by Paramore
This song is amazing, it mixes the traditional style of Paramore with Haley Williams’ style. The guitar solo in the middle is the perfect bridge of her sad, melancholy tone to her more angry runs. And the notes she hits while singing are both iconic and beautiful for the song. She is an extraordinary singer, and this song just furthers the point that she can do so many things and is extremely talented. I love this song because of how emotive and expressive she is; because of thi,s it’s very relatable and personal, which makes me like it even more. I also think that them not performing this song live anymore adds to how amazing the song is and how much Paramore fans appreciate it.
“There’s a Good Reason That These Tables Are Numbered Honey, You Just Haven’t Thought of It Yet” by Panic! At The Disco
I think the fact that the title is an entire sentence long makes this entire song better. Overall, Panic! At the Disco songs are pretty chaotic, but this one is more than most. The song is about superficiality, and takes on stereotypes like vanity, being a “diva”, and the journey to perfection. Throughout the song, the lead singer’s vocal range changes, with the range of notes he sings growing. The trumpets get louder, and the entire song sounds a little louder and confrontational. I think this is an amazing song because of all of these reasons, as well as the fact that I am a huge fan of this band and love all of their songs. I also appreciate that they are confronting stereotypes and assumptions that humanity has of other people in a tactful and witty way that everyone can enjoy.
“Never Let Me Go” by Florence and The Machine
This song is so beautiful, honestly, I’ll listen to anything by this band, but this song will always be my favorite. Even though the song itself is very sad and is about surrender, love, and longing, it is one of my power anthems. I love to play this song when I drive because it’s so peaceful and calm and fits any situation/scenario. It is also perfectly dramatic as well as comforting and fits so well with the overall vibe of this band and their haunted style of singing. My favorite use of this song is in the show One of Us Is Lying on Peacock. I think that the scene of the characters driving down the highway on a motorcycle overlooking the ocean perfectly captures how this song makes me feel.
“Uptown Girl” by Billy Joel
This song is a classic and one of Billy Joel’s best songs. I have been listening to this song since before I can remember; my parents are huge Billy Joel fans. I think I like this song so much because it has become a song I have associated with my time living in New York City. The song is really upbeat, and it is an amazing song to dance to. I think it’s a timeless song that everyone can enjoy and appreciate. It is also a song that you can’t get sick of listening to, it doesn’t matter if you’ve heard it hundreds of times or just once before, it’s an amazing song.
All in all, I love music and it is something that is extremely important and present in my life. If you were put in this scenario, what would be your five songs?
