One of the apps among those which induce endlessly scrolling is TikTok (Photo on public domain).
The only social media I use is Snapchat. I have my reasons which I’m going to briefly explain here.
Keep in mind: This is my opinion. If you disagree, that’s fine. You clicked on this to read it.
I believe that students have truly lost the will to learn — and I’m not going to say I’m not guilty of this myself — due to social media. We’d rather be scrolling aimlessly for hours in class than doing any kind of work.
I’ve also seen people using Snap to communicate with people literally 5 feet away from them.
I still believe that face-to-face interaction is the most important part of high school. I see these freshmen walking around with their face in their phones, not talking to anybody or even making an effort to be social.
It scares me to think that these younger kids are going to grow up more online than they are in person.
Another big pet peeve for me personally is when people get on their phones to scroll as I’m actively having a conversation with them.
I’ll admit — I will take out my phone to look something up if it’s relevant to the conversation, but it’s gonna go back in my pocket after.
Very rarely have I used social media to dodge an in-person conversation because I still enjoy that aspect of society.
You could go to Times Square right now, and I can almost guarantee more than 50% of the people will be on their phones.
When I went to the Grand Canyon, I saw families on their phones standing over the Canyon. I just don’t understand how that is even possible when they’re literally standing next to one of the most marvellous wonders of the world.
I also somewhat disagree with putting my entire life online.
When I check Snap stories and someone has posted literally every little thing they have done, it begs the question: It probably took you more effort to find the best angle to take that picture, and the best caption, rather than just enjoying your life without worrying about posting it online.
Big events, yes. Accomplishments, yes. I’m not saying to not share things you’re proud of or happy about. I post snap stories, but really only when I’m on vacation, and I usually just do a panoramic photo with a caption telling you where I am, And that’s it for the entire trip unless something big happens.
As for meeting people, I think in this day and age it’s nearly impossible without at least some technology. The methods of communication have evolved from having to use a landline and a phonebook to tapping one button to be a on a live video call with someone.
I use social media to talk to my friends and even family all the time, so that I don’t disagree with.
Social media is a useful tool by all means. I’m not saying people should completely cut it out of their lives. It doesn’t even have to be related to school at this point. Live life to the fullest and enjoy moments instead of posting every little thing about them. Spend time with people face to face instead of on facetime.
I don’t dislike social media; I hope I can make that clear. However, I believe that there is a limit and scrolling aimlessly for hours and hours on end is definitely past that limit.
