Leesville Road High School’s Varsity Baseball Team won in an 11 inning game on Tuesday, May 6, 2025 against Richmond High School.
For the first time in 9 years, the Pride has survived round one of the state playoffs. Coach Dylan Cooper reflecting on this big win in the days to follow.
Coach Cooper said, “Our pitchers did a great job keeping us close and keeping us in the game. We had some chances. I am just thankful we were able to get it done.”
Alex Higdon pitched 5.1 innings — 0 runs earned, 4 hits and 4 strikeouts. Jack Fields pitched 4.2 innings — 0 runs earned, 3 hits and 6 strikeouts. Closer, Avery Morton pitched 1 inning with 1 strikeout.
Beginning at 6:30 p.m. and lasting until 10:15 p.m., the game was one that will not be forgotten. Members of other Leesville athletics showed out — Men’s and Women’s Tennis, Men’s Basketball, Women’s Soccer, and Women’s Lacrosse were all present at the baseball game in support of Leesville.
The game was a tense back and forth battle, stuck at 0-0 until the bottom of the 11th. Landon Lewis, freshman, was up to bat.
Lewis said, “It was very loud, and I was excited to hit in a big moment.”
Lewis hit a single and stole second.
Then, Huntley Langlois, sophomore, came up to bat.
Langlois said, “I had a lot of nerves, but I think it helped me to get focused and do good in that moment.”
With a 1-1 count, Langlois hit the ball to the gap between left and center field. Landon Lewis was able to round 3rd and score by a mile.
The Pride stormed the field to celebrate around Lewis and Langlois as fans erupted in celebration.
Lewis described the moment: “I wanted to run as hard as possible at home because I got a bad read on the ball. I didn’t know where it went, but once I saw everyone run out of the dugout, I was relieved.”
The team credits this win to their unity and coaching staff.
Higdon said, “I think we’re a lot more together this year than we have been before. The senior group we have cares a lot about keeping our season going. We spend a lot of time outside of baseball. We hangout a lot, and we’ve done a lot more team dinners this year than last year, that has made us a lot closer.”
Coach Cooper said, “We have some experience out there but just overall I think they really like being on field together and playing together. They get along well, so I think that’s really helped us get to this point.”
But the players could not do it themselves. Coach Cooper has only been at Leesville for one year, yet has been able to mold this team into the skilled individuals that are able to show up and show out for playoffs.
Lewis said, “I am looking forward to these next few years to see our success –how much further we can get and with Coach Cooper? How we can grow under his guidance?”
The Pride will lost to #4 Corinth Holders on Friday, May 9 2025, during round two of playoffs.
As Leesville Baseball looks forward to next year, they will live in the wise words of Coach Cooper, “One play at a time. One pitch at a time.” View the walkoff hit on High.School.OT
