leesvilles production of the play Walk two moons

Every year the honors theater ensemble class at Leesville puts on a production that is almost entirely run by students. This show takes months of preparation and hard work – as we approach opening night, the pressure is on.

Since the beginning of the semester, honors theater has been working vigorously to put this show together. Every class has been spent practicing and preparing for this year’s show, Walk Two Moons. The stage adaptation of Sharon Creech’s novel Walk Two Moons, was written by Tom Arvis.

The play follows a young girl named Sal on a road trip with her grandparents, searching for her mother who disappeared. She shares stories of her life back home, and we follow her thought process as she begins to discover the truth of what happened. “I think it’s a great show,” said Jacob Merrit, Senior, “It’s really interesting because there’s a plot twist and some drama in there.”

Since this show is a much smaller production compared to Leesville’s plays and musicals, it allows the actors and technicians to have more creative liberties in their designs. “I think all the shows are unique because we have a little bit more freedom than what we usually get to do,” said Merrit.

Honors theater ensemble is a smaller class, for each show they need actors to both act and prepare the technical aspects. “I took care of all the line notes and all the lighting, and right now I’m programming the lights,” said María Rodríguez Cardenas, Senior. Everyone was required to make sounds, props, lighting, or anything else that the show might need.

Actors got their roles at the beginning of the spring semester and have been working hard to memorize their lines everyday. “Every night before I go to bed, I look over my lines so I don’t stutter, and so I’m prepared for class the next day – since we run the show and work different scenes,” said Ragine Griffin, Junior.

Every Leesville production takes time and lots of effort from everyone involved, but the honors show is special in its own ways. This year, Leesville’s honors theater program will be performing Walk Two Moons on May 29, 2025 and May 30, 2025 at 6:30 pm in the black box. Tickets can be purchased at leesville.booktix.com
