On April 30, 2025, both Leesville’s mens and womens track teams won the Cap 6 conference championship meet. The boys earned 149.33 points after a close battle with Enloe, who placed second by a difference of only nine points. The girls won with 137 points, ending in a large lead of 21 points.
Emma Smawley, senior, who placed second in her heat for both the 400m and 200m, said, “I wouldn’t say I was surprised, but it was still a very hard win because we were competing against a lot of very strong schools and athletes.”
Emonuelle Haynes, senior who placed 2nd in his 100m heat, said, “It felt great after I found out we won, I felt like a winner.”
This was the second year in a row the girls won, and the fourth year in a row the boys secured the victory. Eric Gamble, Leesville Track Coach, was very pleased with how both teams did, especially after the girls’ team was seeded fifth overall before the race.
The meet took place on Cardinal Gibbons’ and began with the 4×800 at 4:45 p.m. It consisted of 18 events for boys and girls, such as the 100-meter dash, 3200-meter run (2 mile), and the 800-meter run. The meet ended with a high-stakes pole vault between Dillon Kaulback of Leesville and James Witt of Athens Drive.
While the Cap 6 championship has no direct impact on who makes it to regionals, as individuals or relay teams have to meet a certain time in order to qualify, it is still very competitive.
Antoine Allen, sophomore, who ran the 400, 200, 2×400, and 4×400, said, “The meet was amazing, there were a lot of people, and it was more hyped up than a normal meet.”
Gavin Clewely, freshman, who placed fourth in the 3200 said, “The crowd was very lively, which made my race feel even more competitive.”
This was the final Cap 6 track meet as next year, Leesville will be a part of Cap 8, which consists of:
- Leesville
- Athens Drive
- Broughton
- Corinth Holders
- Enloe
- Millbrook
- Rolesville
- Wakefield
Leesville secured its spot as the final winners of Cap 6 Track and hopes to open Cap 8 with another win.
