As the year comes to a close and Honor Society deadlines come nearer for juniors and seniors, many students are looking for last-minute service opportunities.
LRHS service clubs
LRHS is home to many service oriented clubs. These clubs can be an excellent way for students to earn service hours and be involved in the Leesville community.
Community Cares Club is a service based club that meets on the last Thursday of each month to write cards to show appreciation for people in need. One card written equates to 30 minutes of service. For more information and to stay up to date with meeting dates, see @leesvillecommunitycares on Instagram.
For artistically inclined people, the LRHS art service club is an excellent opportunity to give back to the community and earn service hours while completing fun artistic projects. This club serves to provide an array of arts and crafts to hospitals, care centers, and more. The last club meeting of the year will be on May 21, 2025 in room 1204.
“Getting involved in service clubs has helped me get service hours and stay involved in the community while also hanging out with my friends and having fun. It’s really rewarding to be able to contribute to the community and be able to have fun while doing it,” said Katie Carrigan, senior.
Key Club is another way for students to get involved both on and off campus. This is a service club that helps students connect with volunteer projects and service opportunities through hygiene drives, holiday cards, goodie bags, and more. Each month, the club posts an array of service opportunities for students to get involved with and requires 50 completed service hours to retain membership in the club by the end of the year.
Community involvement
Many students opt to volunteer for organizations outside of LRHS to give back to the community and gain service hours for honor societies and clubs.
Students may choose organizations outside of school that they are passionate about or wish to get involved in. Raleigh is home to a large number of organizations that are always looking for volunteers.
“I have been volunteering at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences for about a year now. I usually take care of the insects and make sure their enclosures are clean. Sometimes I also take them out to show to museum guests during events. I always really liked going to the museum growing up and wanted more science-related hours, so I started volunteering,” said Ashley Kibicho, senior.
Similarly, Keira Dillon, senior, expresses her passion for animals through volunteering at the Safe Haven Cat shelter in Raleigh, NC. “I started working with Safe Haven when I took the internship class. Then I liked it so much that I continued volunteering after the class was over. Usually, I clean and set up cages for the animals, then also clean laundry and dishes… I have been working there since January and plan to continue when I come back home from college,” said Dillon.
Finding organizations you are interested in and wish to work with outside of school is an excellent way to get involved and fulfill service hour requirements. Online websites such as Volunteer Match allow students to connect with companies actively searching for volunteers.
