Sleep is essential for all people, but especially students. When brains are still developing, it’s important to allow them a full eight hours of sleep to regain their power. However, most students do not meet this recommendation due to early start times, homework, social media, and extracurricular activities.
Teenagers’ bodies and brains are still developing, playing a crucial role in memory, focus, and the ability to fully grasp concepts in school.
Violet Jordan, sophomore, said, “I don’t get much sleep because I have to stay up doing homework and I hardly have time to talk to my friends.”
Lack of sleep can lead to serious consequences. Students who don’t get enough rest often struggle with concentration, mood swings, and poor academic performance.
Finley Lewis, sophomore, said, “I wish that school started later because I’m late a lot because I’m sleeping in.”
Some students suggest that Leesville change its start time. Starting school at 7:18am seems too early to get ready, eat breakfast, and get to school on time. Since school only ends at 2:18pm, there is more time in the afternoon to push school hours back.
